Y Byd to appear on 3rd March 2008
subscriptions on sale now!
At a recent event organised by Cambrensis at Cardiff's Element Bar, Monday, 3rd March 2008 was announced as the launch date for Y Byd.
The newspaper's editor, Aled Price, said:
'Y Byd will revolutionise journalism in Welsh. For the first time Wales will have a national daily newspaper in Welsh.'
He added:
'Y Byd will be full of news — local, national and international. It will be a complete newspaper — incorporating sport, leisure, business and politics. A lively website will also be central to the enterprise as Y Byd breaks new ground with a live online newspaper. This will be the only website in Welsh which will offer a full news service in Welsh.'
The Y Byd website will offer exclusive services to subscribers who will also benefit from a substantial reduction on the price of the paper and special offers in partnership with the paper's commercial partners.
According to Aled Price:
'The paper is aiming for 5,000 subscribers and the marketing campaign to sell subscriptions starts today. The aim of having a high percentage of subscribers is based on the success of a number of other newspapers which have followed a similar model. We will be aiming to attract more readers, in addition to subscribers, later on. The paper has already gained considerable support — even before a single page has been printed. Now there is an opportunity for our readers to be a part of the success and subscribe beforehand to the paper.'
Y Byd's headquarters will be in Machynlleth where the team will produce the daily paper and website. In addition to the staff in Machynlleth Y Byd will employ journalists throughout Wales, bringing full-time staff to a total of 24.
Ned Thomas, Dyddiol Cyf's Chairman, said:
'Today is a milestone in an ongoing process. We are building a community around the paper and the website – we have 340 private investors which secures the ownership of the paper in Wales; 1700 members of the Supporters Club, and now we are launching the subscription marketing campaign. Y Byd has received incredible support from people across Wales and beyond, including non-Welsh speaking supporters.
I'm also grateful for business grant aid from the Welsh Assembly Government and Powys County Council. In the weeks to come we will be looking for further support from the Welsh business community. The promotion of the Welsh economy is a priority for the newspaper.
We will also continue talks with political parties in the National Assembly urging them to build on promises made during the recent election campaign to help establish a daily newspaper based on firm foundations in accordance with the expectations of the Council of Europe.'
ENDS
Aled Price, (Editor), Ned Thomas (Chairman) and Rebecca Williams (General Manager) will be available for interviews.
