gwynedd council
— get on in gwynedd (llwyddo'n lleol)

Llwyddo'n Lleol is a £750,000 project which is managed by Gwynedd Council and funded under the Welsh Assembly Government's Rural Community Action programme, facilitated by the Department for Enterprise, Innovation and Networks (formerly WDA).

The programme was designed to answer key needs which were identified in Gwynedd, namely the need to:

  • Foster a spirit of enterprise amongst our young people (13—30)
  • encourage young people to become full an active members of their community and the local economy
  • to highlight the choice to stay in Gwynedd to live and work as an adventurous choice

Gwynedd Council's brief for the roadshows was to:

'develop and implement a series of high-profile, fun and innovative roadshows for young people in Gwynedd.'

The brief also went on to state that:

'the brand and message of Llwyddo'n Lleol should be emphasised throughout the campaign, and a communications strategy should be developed to promote the show in the local and national media including radio and television.'

It was also noted that the roadshows should:

  • Reinforce young people's understanding and knowledge of enterprise, and their knowledge of the opportunities available to them locally
  • Reinforce positive attitudes towards enterprise and nurture a 'can-do' spirit
  • Receive the clear message that Gwynedd is a great place to live and work and that there are plenty of opportunities available to them locally with enterprise being one of the viable options.

Having developed the concept, we decided to implement the roadshows in the form of a day of activities for Year 9 pupils in all of Gwynedd's secondary schools, 14 in all. Three locations were chosen for the events: Galeri, Plas Tan y Bwlch and Glan-llyn. Young entrepreneurs were found from all walks of life — including a yoga instructor, an animator, a TV presenter, an author, an outdoor and extreme sports instructor, and a member of a Welsh rock band who also runs a music for young people project. These individuals were responsible for running half hour sessions for young people showing them the range of possibilities open to them in terms of living and working in Gwynedd.

Cambrensis were responsible for developing the entire concept behind the shows, branding and marketing the shows to schools and other stakeholders, publicising the shows in the press and media, providing materials and including the Get on in Gwynedd partners in the plans for the day as well as managing every aspect of the event over the four dates.

The feedback for the road shows was particularly favourable, both from Gwynedd Council and from the teachers and young people who took part.
